PARK BOYS PUMMELLED AT GARRATT PARK
Boys were beaten 8-1 at Garratt Park as Old Boys Clapham ruthlessly scythed through Park Boys like a knife through butter. Jelle van der Zwet was awarded the man of the match award for his dominance of midfield aided and abetted by Cian McGuire in the middle. Joe Kubik and Mahf Chowdhury grabbed a brace each before half time with Dean Barrett, Charlie Horner, Markus Bristow and McGuire all firing home for the home side after the break. What a game, what a classic at Garratt Park!!!
OBC were in fine spirits after the excellent 5-1 away win at Old Plymouthians the previous week. Matt Custance continued in goal. Charlie Horner returned at right back keen to make up for the penalty handball against Pilgrims Well. Andy Cochrane moved to centre back from right back. Marc Henderson skippered the side as Alex McGreevy fell over a stone on holiday in the week meaning Simon Burbage was called up to play at left back. Across the midfield Mahf Chowdhury was making his first start of the season. The in form Jelle van der Zwet was pushed into midfield as cover for Steve Allison who was away on a half-term break. Cian McGuire continued at centre midfield with Leroy Donald continuing on the left wing. Up front Dean Barrett was again partnered by Joe Kubik. On the bench OBC welcomed back Johan Bakker with Marcus Bristow and Paul Lewis making up the other subs. Joicey said to the lads before the came that the wingers would be key to this came, low crosses across the six yard box from Leroy and Mahf were vital. It was also vital that OBC pressed their defence into making mistakes so Joicey wanted a high in your face tempo game.
Marc Henderson won the toss and chose to play uphill at Garratt Park. Park Boys looked lively without being dangerous and it was OBC who quickly got into our stride. Dean Barrett was played in one on one with the Park Boys keeper but Dean fired his shot firmly into the keeper to deny the OBC an early goal.
Joe Kubik had an fine effort fizz past the right hand post unlucky not to add to his brace of goals from the previous week.
At the other end Park Boys forced three or four corners which were dealt with expertly by Henderson and Cochrane. Leroy Donald made a dangerous flying tackle in the box but fortunately came away with the ball. The ball was forced out wide to Mahf Chowdhury who had a clear run at a right-footed left back. Chowdhury got around his man but last ditch tackle forced the ball out for OBC’s first corner of the game. The corner was swung in and Marc Henderson managed to get a firm header on the ball but the effort flew the wrong side of the left hand post.
Park Boys had a fizzing effort from the edge of the area well saved by Matt Custance in goal to keep the scores level. Custance flew through the air to turn the ball out for a corner. Another impressive bit of goalkeeping by the new stopper.
The ball was cleared and OBC were able to breakaway once more. Horner played the ball up to Chowdhury who rolled the ball inside to Jelle van der Zwet. The movement shown by the OBC players were incredible . Van der Zwet laid the ball into Charlie Horner who found Cian McGuire overlapping on the edge of the Park Boys box. McGuire crossed powerfully for Joe Kubik to thunder the ball home with his right foot to allow the OBC to take a deserved lead. 1-0 Old Boys Clapham, 17 minutes gone, Kubik’s 3rd goal of the season.
The lead was quickly double as the excellent Jelle van der Zwet weighted a perfect through ball for Mahf Chowdhury to run on to. Chowdhury from a wide angle thumped the ball across the six yard box and in off the far post. What a finish from the flying winger. 2-0 twenty four minutes gone, Chowdhury’s 5th goal of the season.
OBC’s tails were up and confidence oozed through every inch of OBC’s play. Kubik added the third on twenty eight minutes as Cian McGuire played a perfectly weighted through ball and Joe one on one made no mistake to fire to into the top right hand corner giving the keeper no chance for 3-0 on twenty eight minutes. Kubik’s 2nd brace in as many games, his 4th for the season.
Chowdhury added a fourth before half time as Jelle van der Zwet again provided an exquisite through ball for Chowdhury to run on to and round the keeper. Chowdhury’s 6th goal of the season.
At half time Joicey said that everyone was playing well, the pressing was awesome by the forwards, Jelle and Cian were winning every second ball in the middle of the park and the defence was snuffing out everything Park Boys had. Leroy Donald was a bit frustrated that he was not getting the better of the excellent right back but it did not matter as the damage was being done down the right and through the centre.
The second half kicked off and the hardworking Dean Barrett got his goal within five minutes. Dean was played with an excellent ball from Charlie Horner. Dean appeared offside but the full back was asleep and played Dean on. Dean steadied himself and dispatched the ball under the keeper and into the corner of the net for 5-0 lead. 50 minutes gone.
Park Boys were able to get on the score-sheet however as a long punt up the middle was not dealt with by Marc Henderson and the Park Boys striker managed to muscle Andy Cochrane off the ball and striker finished well beyond Matt Custance in goal. A goal from nothing. 52 minutes gone 5-1.
It was not long before normal service was resumed as Joe Kubik nut-megged a Park Boys player inside the penalty area to lay the ball of for Cian McGuire to strike from just outside the area and high into the net, another great strike from McGuire on 54 minutes. McGuire’s 6th goal of the season. 6-1 OBC.
Johan Bakker made his return on 58 minutes coming on for Simon Burbage. Bakker went up front with Dean Barrett. Joe Kubik went to left wing and Leroy Donald moved to left back.
Bakker should have got his first goal of the season as he was played through by fellow countryman Jelle van der Zwet but Bakker maybe had too much time and pulled his shot wide of the left hand post. Former skipper Liam Corbett sent Bakker a text in the week stating he bet Bakker would come on and have a one on one and miss, how true this proved to the big Dutchman’s embarrassment.
Markus Bristow was introduced with twenty five minutes to go as the excellent Mahf Chowdhury took a knock on the ankle.
Bristow was quickly into the came as Bakker played a nice ball across the park from left to right allowing Bristow to use his pace and lay the ball on a plate for Charlie Horner. With only the keeper to beat Horner could not decide to lay it off to Barrett who was waiting for a tap in or blast it past the keeper. In the end Horner tamely rolled the ball back to the keeper.
Leroy Donald was unlucky not to get on the score sheet as he had an effort from twenty five yards deflected onto the cross bar.
Charlie Horner made up for his earlier miss and it was again Bristow who played the full back in and this time Horner made no mistake as he rounded the keeper and walked the ball in. Horner’s 4th goal of the season, 71 minutes gone 7-1.
There was still time for Markus Bristow to get in on the act. Bakker played the ball into Dean Barrett who put a lovely ball through for Bristow to run onto, Bristow’s touch knocked the ball past the keeper but was hauled down in the process by the Park Boys centre but the momentum of the ball trundled slowly and softly towards the goal line and the ball rolled over the line in what was a comedy goal. Referee Vladimir Ninkovic had his whistle in his mouth had it not gone in. Bristow’s first goal of the season on 84 minutes.
Great performance lads, great result. Next week it is Hersham Elm Grove Reserves of the Surrey Elite Reserve League. They have only lost once this season so no doubt it will be a tough game and currently are top of their league.
